The three-member Board of County Commissioners is the executive and legislative body charged with running Kitsap County, the 6th most populated county in Washington State with nearly 250,000 residents. Each County Commissioner has a specific district. While the general election is a countywide vote, the two finalists are selected from a primary vote within only the district in which the candidates reside. The Commissioners adopt and manage a $300 + million annual budget, and directly oversee the Departments of Community Development, Public Works, Parks & Recreation, Personnel & Human Services, Administrative Services, and Information Services.
The Commissioners provide local services to residents of unincorporated Kitsap County such as law enforcement protection, planning, road maintenance, and parks. In addition, the Commissioners manage regional programs for all Kitsap residents that include criminal justice elements such as the county jail, prosecutor’s office, superior courts, and juvenile detention facility. Kitsap Transit, Health District, Kitsap Consolidated Housing Authority, CENCOM, Emergency Management are just some of the boards of which the County Commissioners are also members.
